DeRoy began his career as a graduate student assistant in the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, working up to senior research associate and associate director of research development in the University’s Office of Research. He earned a BA in biology from Franklin & Marshall College and studied medicine at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine; however, he discontinued in his third year due to illness. Thereafter, he attended graduate school and earned a PhD in higher education from the University’s School of Education. He also earned an MPA from Pitt’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. Dr. DeRoy used this broad-ranging background in his professional endeavors. He became known for his work in project, program and proposal development, particularly in planning and securing funding for inter- and multidisciplinary programs and centers. Among the latter, he is proud of his work as the principal planner of the University of Pittsburgh Honors Program and the author of the UHP planning proposal. The UHP evolved into the present-day University of Pittsburgh Honors College. In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. DeRoy is a social entrepreneur. During his time in academia, he was heavily involved in community service. On leaving the University, he launched a second career as a volunteer in social services. He became a social entrepreneur, cofounding with Rev. Marcus W. Harvey a community-based drug and alcohol agency in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, titled Strength, Inc. Dr. DeRoy is also a philanthropist. He donates thousands each year, primarily to animal welfare organizations and other charities as well. Among his large-scale donations are gifts he made to Temple David, which were used to purchase Haggadot and new sets of High Holiday prayer books for the congregation. He also contributed to funding for the Patricia K. and Ralph L. DeRoy Archive at the Heinz History Center and substantial endowment funding for the Dr. Al K. DeRoy Endowed Judaic Scholar/Artist in Residence Fund and the Al K. DeRoy, PhD, MPA, Class of 1970, Endowed Animal Welfare Fund at Franklin & Marshall College.
