As the first woman chemical engineer to be hired by the Bayer Corporation in December 1978, Joyce Ann Gaetano was responsible for implementing strategies and directing specialty groups, including products that consisted of foams, elastomers and structural materials that were used in the engineering, electronics, furnishings and transportation industries. Initially hired by Mobay Corporation, an owned subsidiary of Bayer, as a technical product representative, she ascended the ranks to product manager, technical marketing specialist, supervisor of specialty transportation polymers and manager of new markets development by 1993. Thereafter, she served as a marketing manager of elastomer textile backings, business manager of froth sheet foam and industry manager of rawmaterials prior to retiring in 2003. At the inception of her career in 1976, Ms. Gaetano served as an apprentice chemical engineer for the United States Army Corp of Engineers before serving Westinghouse Corporation in the same capacity in their Nuclear Research and Development Group.
