140 MILLENNIUM M arjorie Anne Flory has used her skills to make a name for herself in the writing and editing field. Ms. Flory, who has always been interested in reading and writing, had dreams of working in publishing. She wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father, who made a career for himself as a journalist. To prepare for her fruitful career, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College. Upon graduating, she became a library assistant for Cultural Services of the French Embassy from 1951 to 1952. During her transition to becoming a researcher for Reader’s Digest, she completed postgraduate work at Columbia University. Ms. Flory remained at Reader’s Digest for 32 years, maintaining positions as an associate editor and senior editor. She left the company in 1985 to pursue her own ventures as a freelance writer and editor in New York City. In the latter part of her lengthy career, Ms. Flory was an editor for Fourth Write Press from 1993 to 2010. She has extended her services to her community as an interpreter for the New York Road Runners club since 1998 and as a tutor and volunteer for Services for Children from 1980 to 1985. Never letting her pen away from paper, she co-authored a book titled “Reel Life/Real Life” and has also been a copy editor. She remains active within her field through her affiliations and memberships, including the Smith College Club of New York City, for which she served as a board member from 2003 to 2005.
