248 MILLENNIUM D r. Howard Lonsdale comes from a family of doctors. His father, a well-known professor who was board-certified in neurology and psychology, served during World War I in the trenches as a medical officer, and his grandfather was a psychologist. With them as his influences and a desire to help people, he gravitated toward medicine. Dr. Lonsdale began his first rotation as an intern at St. Louis City Hospital and then started a residency in the ear, nose and throat specialty. Soon after completing his residency, he joined the Air Force and served at Travis Air Force Base, working as chief physician of the ear, nose, and throat clinic from 1966 to 1999. After leaving that position, he joined the board of directors of several institutions, including Village General Hospital and Broadway Hospital, where he was also president and served as chief of staff. In addition to his career as a physician, Dr. Lonsdale was vice president of the Bay Area Comprehensive Health Pharmacy, co-founder of the Solano County Hospice, and president of the Solano County Medical Society and the Comprehensive Health Planning Association. A medical director for more than 30 martial arts tournaments, he is also a former director of the World Martial Arts Association. Dr. Lonsdale is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and a member of the California Medical Society, for which he’s served as chairman since 1970. He has been named Man of the Year and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Unified Martial Arts in 2001, as well as an award from the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce in 1968.
