250 MILLENNIUM A s a certified teacher in Texas, Dr. Willis Lukenbill has been teaching adults for over 50 years. Dr. Lukenbill was encouraged to pursue an education and became the first person in his immediate family to go to college. During his time in school, he enjoyed spending a great deal of time in the library and noticed a need for librarians. Once he decided on a career, he started working as a high school librarian and remained in that position for two years before becoming a reference librarian at Austin College. Within a year, he had gained enough experience to serve as an instructor at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now known as Louisiana Tech University) from 1964 to 1969. Four years later, he left Louisiana and became an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1976 he made a home at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has been an assistant professor, associate professor, and professor. Outside of his career in education, he was an archivist consultant and a member of the board of directors for the Metropolitan Community Church in Austin. Dr. Lukenbill has contributed immensely to his field as the author of “Youth Literature: An Interdisciplinary, Annotated Guide to North American Dissertation Research, 1930-1985,” “AIDS-HIV Information Services and Programs in Libraries,” “Collection Development for the School Library Media Center: New Directions for a New Century,” and “Biography in the Lives of Youth: Culture, Society and Information.” He has also written articles in professional journals and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Library History. Dr. Lukenbill earned a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of North Texas in 1961, a Master of Library Science at the University of Oklahoma in 1963, and a PhD from Indiana University Bloomington in 1973.
