256 MILLENNIUM A certified health education specialist, Dr. Patricia Davison Mail has over two decades of professional experience conducting inspections and enforcing adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals. Dr. Mail began her career as a health educator in 1970 and continued as chief of the health education branch of the Portland Area Indian Health Service. After serving seven years there, she took on the position of deputy chief of field operations for the National Health Service Corps in 1986. She continued working for the organization as a professor, member of the activities board, deputy clinical chief and branch chief. During her career, she has been affiliated with the Office of Public Health Service Surgeon General, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the U.S. Public Health Service, and the American Public Health Association, where she served as board president from 2005 until her retirement in 2007. Dr. Mail has utilized her knowledge and expertise to write a book with D.R. McDonald titled “Tulapai to Tokay.” She has also had the opportunity to serve as an editor and associate editor of books and journals in the field, and she has written articles for numerous publications. Her service to the community and her field earned her the Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal. As a student, she received a U.S. Public Health Service Traineeship. Dr. Mail continues to be active in the field as a fellow of the American School Health Association and the Society for Applied Anthropology, as well as a member of many health-related organizations. Her successful career is backed by a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts from the University of Arizona, a Master of Science from Smith College, a Master in Public Health from Yale University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland.
