272 MILLENNIUM C harlotte McGowan is a retired anthropologist and archeologist who knew at a young age that she wanted to be a teacher. Ms. McGowan’s dreamwas solidified after she took advanced courses in anthropology at San Diego State University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts with honors. During her time at the institution, she became a teaching assistant, director of the physical anthropology laboratory, and a professor of anthropology. Ms. McGowan left the institution in 1969 and became a professor of anthropology for San Diego Evening College from 1969 to 1971. She continued to teach anthropology until her retirement in 1999, working at the University of the Americas, the Patrick Henry Adult School, the North Shores Adult School, the San Diego Adult School, and Southwestern College, where she was named aWoman of Distinction by her colleagues. In addition to her career as a profound professor, Ms. McGowan has also been the director and liaison for the National American Interface, as well as a consultant for the Campo Band of Mission Indians and various other Native American groups, the California Department of Transportation and Environmental Impact Studies. She has utilized her anthropological knowledge to author several works, including “Inventory of Artifacts from Archaeological Excavation” and “Final Report on Excavation” while also contributing chapters to books and articles to professional journals. Ms. McGowan remains active in her field as a member of the Congress of History of San Diego and Imperial Counties, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Museum of Man, the Southwestern Mission Research Center, the Southwestern Anthropological Association, and the Archaeological Institute of America. She attributes her success to her love and passion for her field, working hard and traveling to exotic places, as well as having great mentors like her eighth-grade teacher, Ms. Dora Gillilland, and a university professor, Dr. Spencer Rogers.
