214 MILLENNIUM M atilee Howard Johnson is a retired headmistress with over two decades of professional experience. Ms. Johnson became involved in her profession because of the wonderful teachers she had who inspired her. To prepare for her career, she earned a Bachelor of Science at the University of Georgia and a Master of Administration from Georgia State University, and completed postgraduate work at Colgate University, Emory University and Oxford University. After gaining her certificate in educational administration in Georgia, she began her career as a teacher at Everglades School for Girls. She continued to earn similar positions at The Hamlin School in San Francisco, Calif., and Westminster’s Girls’ School in Atlanta, Ga., where she made her home. During her tenure at the school, she served as dean of students from 1966 to 1972 and as headmistress from 1972 until her retirement in 1977. During her successful career, Ms. Johnson also served as a substitute teacher for Dana Hall, an educational consultant at Pingry and Kent Place Schools, conference chairman for the Mid-South Independent School Business Officers Association, and on the convention committee of the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls. She has been an avid community member, utilizing her leadership skills on the advisory board and as convocation chairman for the March of Dimes, and as a member of the Community Council of Montgomery, the board of the directors of the Landmarks Foundation, and the women’s committee of the Carnegie Museum and the Disney Family Museum. Ms. Johnson has been featured in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women.
