255 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine D r. Ursula Mahlendorf is a literature educator who was born October 24, 1929 in Germany. Dr. Mahlendorf received most of her formal education in her home country before migrating to the United States in 1953. Once acclimated, she became a student at Brown University, where she received a Master of Arts in English and a PhD in German literature. She first gained experience as an educator at her alma mater serving as a teaching assistant for four years. Wanting to embark on a career as a full-fledged teacher, Dr. Mahlendorf moved from Providence, R.I., to Santa Barbara, Calif. With the experience she had acquired as a teaching assistant, she became an acting instructor of German at the University of California, Santa Barbara and was soon promoted to professor of German. She made the university her home and continued to excel as a professor of women’s studies, associate director, and campus coordinator of the education abroad program. She reached new heights when she became the associate dean of the College of Letters and Science in 1986. It was clear that Dr. Mahlendorf had made her mark in education, as she was granted emerita status in 1993. Dr. Mahlendorf has contributed her expertise to many subjects, writing several books, co-editing others, and penning over 90 articles for academic journals. She has had the honor of being an associate editor for publications such as American Imago, the American Journal of Social Psychiatry, and the Journal of Cultural and Evolutionary Psychology. Her professional affiliations include the Modern Language Association, the Association for Applied Psychoanalysis, the U.S. General Services Administration, and the Coalition of Women in German. Dr. Mahlendorf was awarded the Edward A. Dickson Emeriti Professorship at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
