376 MILLENNIUM F or many people, the word “psychiatrist” conjures up images of a bespectacled professional, usually an older male, diligently scribbling notes in a ledger while a patient lies supine on a leather couch and recounts their life story. Dr. Michael H. Stone doesn’t wear glasses and spends more time in an academic setting as a clinical professor of psychiatry in Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons than in a stuffy, overcrowded office, yet he remains committed to helping patients preserve and protect their mental health. Dr. Stone earned a Bachelor of Arts and an MD from Cornell University, in 1954 and 1958 respectively. After completing a three-year residency in psychiatry through the College of Physicians and Surgeons, he joined the institution’s faculty as an associate professor of psychiatry in 1973 and remained in that position until 1977, when he became an associate professor with Weill Cornell Medical College. From 1980 through 1988, he held academic appointments at Cornell, the University of Connecticut and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, before eventually returning to Columbia, where he has been for the past three decades. Though his clinical practice includes psychoanalysis and forensic psychiatry, Dr. Stone specializes in personality disorders, which can manifest in individuals in a number of ways. As a member of the Personality Studies Institute, he is part of a team of professionals who share an interest in assessing, diagnosing and treating these disorders to help people lead healthier, more balanced lives. In addition to his affiliation with this organization and others, including the American College of Psychiatrists, the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, Dr. Stone has contributed more than 250 articles to professional journals. From 2006 to 2007, he hosted seasons one and two of “Most Evil,” a show appearing on the Investigation Discovery channel that rates murderers on a 22-point scale of evil conceived by Dr. Stone himself. He also authored “Personality-Disordered Patients: Treatable and Untreatable,” published in 2006, and “The Anatomy of Evil,” which was released in 2009. While he continues serving on boards and actively contributing to the advancement of his field, Dr. Stone also enjoys playing piano and collecting rare books. Michael H.
