Five Ways A rtificial I ntelligence is Already Here It seems like every day there is news about advances in artificial intelligence (AI), from computers winning games against humans, to robots taking human jobs to prominent scientists warning of the dangers of runaway AI. In fact, artificial intelligence is a term used to describe any computer algorithm that displays behaviors such as learning and problem-solving. As computers become more and more advanced, an interesting phenomenon known as the “AI effect” occurs; people become used to the idea of computers performing certain tasks and discount them as not really being AI. Here are five ways in which AI is already part of day-to-day life: 1 Virtual Assistants Virtual assistants are probably one of the most popular applications of artificial intelligence. Apple's Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and Microsoft’s Cortana allow you to use your voice to find useful information by simply asking, “Where is the closest restaurant?,” or “How is the weather today?” They are also able to play music and videos, and act as customer service representatives. Virtual assistants gather a huge amount of data from their users and use machine learning to analyze their behavior and predict their needs. 2 Health Care Due to its ability to analyze a large amount of information, AI is perfectly suited for diagnostic and drug development purposes. DeepMind for Google has teamed with the U.K.'s National Health Service to develop a computer algorithm that can detect cancer using medical images from sick patients. Meanwhile, IBM Watson has paired with several companies to develop diagnostic tools, predict hypoglycemic episodes in diabetic patients, and develop new drugs. 3 Smart Home Devices The home of the future will consist of connected devices that constantly communicate with each other and share data. From refrigerators that know when you run out of your favorite foods and automatically order more to security systems that use face recognition to tell when a stranger is in your house, all these systems use artificial intelligence to analyze and predict their users' behavior. 4 Spam Filters Artificial intelligence is already being used to protect us against spam. Simple spam filters that specify a particular string of words are not very effective since the spammers constantly change their approach. However, AI systems can learn from where the message was sent and the user’s own definition of what constitutes spam based on the content of the message. Thanks to AI, spam filters, like that of Gmail, can stop unwanted messages from clogging up our inboxes with incredible accuracy. 5 Credit Card Fraud Prevention By using AI that can analyze a large database of transactions and also learn from shoppers' habits, banks can easily tell which credit card transactions are likely to be fraudulent. At the same time, the use of AI algorithms can minimize the number of credit card transactions that get declined every day because they were falsely identified as fraudulent. When most people think of artificial intelligence, they envision robots that will take people's jobs and even eventually replace humanity. The truth, however, is that our day-to-day lives are already infused with AI that is becoming more and more intelligent by learning from human behavior. From digital assistants that can recognize speech patterns to AI used by banks to detect fraudulent transactions, artificial intelligence has great potential and is here to stay.
