85 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Specializing in the areas of both American and Asian history, Thomas William Carneal excelled as a professor of the esteemed disciplines at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, between 1968 and 2002. Following his longstanding tenure that spanned across nearly 40 years, he was ultimately named a distinguished emeritus professor in 2020. During his time spent in academia, Mr. Carneal was an organizer of the Japanese Studies Association through the university, in which he helped conduct month-long seminars that were instructed by experts from Japan and the United States. For these seminars, 20 students who would benefit from learning about Japanese history were selectively chosen to enhance their understanding of the subject. This project lasted for 20 years until the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. To prepare for his outstanding career, Mr. Carneal received a Master of Arts from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1965, as well as completed coursework toward a doctorate (all but dissertation) in 1980. Shortly thereafter, he served for three years as a professor at the Kemper Military School. Earlier, Mr. Carneal served in the United States Army between 1953 and 1956, attaining the rank of E-5. In light of his military success, he was decorated for national defense by the United States Army, as well as received a Good Conduct Medal and a German Occupational Medal. Although he has experienced many career highlights, Mr. Carneal is especially proud of working on behalf of the Local Historical Society, where he contributed to the substantial increase in budget and establishment of new local facilities due to his eminent leadership. Additionally, he served as a member of the Nodaway County Historical Society. He has attributed his success to his ability to network with others and collaborate with both students and colleagues throughout his career. Looking toward the future, Mr. Carneal intends to further mentor students and other emerging professionals, all while enjoying his retirement.
