130 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING Dr. Varma is a registered professional engineer and a professional transportation operations engineer via the American Institute of Certified Planners. A longtime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), he has served as chair of their T&DI Aviation Council since 2020, having formerly been chair of their T&DI Airport Planning and Operations Committee from 2011 to 2020. Sitting on various councils for the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Dr. Varma is also a member of the World Conference for the Transportation Research Society. He has earned several grants from the National Science Foundation, North Dakota State University and South Dakota Department of Transportation. Dr. Varma is especially proud of garnering expertise in sustainable transportation, transportation financing and economics, research in infrastructure management, airport planning and design, traffic engineering and computer-aided design. As a native of Patna, Bihar, India, Dr. Amiy Varma witnessed a myriad of infrastructure issues in his home country, as well as a great need for transportation improvement. Deciding thereafter to make a difference in his community, he attended the Indian Institute of Technology, fromwhich he earned a BTech in civil engineering in 1985. Upon his relocation to the United States, he subsequently attended Vanderbilt University and received an MS in civil engineering in 1987. After some years of experience in the field, he furthered his education with a PhD from Purdue University in 1993. At the inception of his career in 1985, Dr. Varma served Tata Electric Companies in Bombay, India, as a planning engineer. Following his immigration, he served Vanderbilt University and Purdue University as a research assistant between 1986 and 1990. Departing from these roles, he became an assistant professor at North Dakota State University in 1990 and was promoted the position of associate professor in 1996.
