Phillips is well-regarded for her longstanding tenure in the food and nutrition service industries and community wellness. Mrs. Phillips’ expertise in the food service industry is grounded in her upbringing on a farm, where she developed a passion for growing, planning and preparing nutritious meals. This foundation led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in home economics and graduate from Chicago State University in 1975. She taught home economics in the Chicago Public Schools before earning a master’s degree in education from National Louis University in 1985. From 1979 to 1995, Mrs. Phillips held numerous roles in the Chicago Public School System, including test kitchen supervisor, assistant director of food and nutrition services, and food service director for 600 schools. Her lengthy tenure was marked by a signature commitment to fostering productive collaborations that engaged both the school and the community. To remain abreast of changes within her field, Mrs. Phillips previously served as president of the Illinois School Nutrition Association from 1993 to 1994 and founded the International Council of Nutrition Solutions Foundation in 1996. Mrs. Phillips ultimately retired from Chicago Public Schools in 1995, after which she thrived as the president of CP Professional Food Services Inc., exhibiting broad specialization in food procurement and forging lasting partnerships with food manufacturers through 2009. Thereafter, from 2009 to 2018, she served as the director of food and nutrition services at School District U-46 before commencing her current role as the president of CP Consulting Services LLC, a firm she launched in 2019 after retiring. Outside of her primary commitments, Mrs. Phillips authored the book “Knowing Your Heritage Matters: Staying Connected Matters More” and has mentored emerging authors since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
