8 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ACADEMIA, EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES DENISE GEIGER SENIOR TRANSITION COORDINATOR FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION Leander Independent School District Leander, TX When Denise Geiger chose to leave deaf education after 12 years, she felt both exhilarated and scared. However, this leap of faith into transition services for special education has led to an impactful and fulfilling career during which she has shaped students, their families and the institutions that serve them. Ms. Geiger is the senior transition coordinator for special education at the Leander Independent School District in Leander, Texas, a role she has held since 1999. In this position, she helps students with special needs transition to adult life, aiming to improve their outcomes, whether they choose to attend college or enter the workforce. She also liaises with parents and helps them develop transition plans for their children. In addition to her direct training with students and their parents, Ms. Geiger oversees systems that support individuals with disabilities ages 3 to 22 as they seek sustainable outcomes. She focuses on the early development of self-determination, encouraging students to become aware of their disability and to use their voices in meetings. Ms. Geiger also supports the local high schools’ vocational adjustment team and supports the team working in 18+ transition services to work through systems. She collaborated with high school teachers to create the Transition English 4 class, which serves seniors at the six high schools and uses English language skills to address transition topics. Ms. Geiger’s innovative approach has set new standards within Texas and inspired educators statewide. She has been instrumental in expanding the district’s transition program from minimal service within 18+ from no teacher to nine teachers, 28 job coaches and a principal. There is also now a vibrant Vocational Services program with six dedicated teachers at each high school and 15 job coaches. The school district recently recognized Ms. Geiger by naming a new building for the transition services program in her honor. The Denise Geiger Compass Center can house up to 200 students aged 18 to 22; currently, 148 students attend. It represents the culmination of her work to establish a system that supports students with disabilities beyond high school by connecting the dots of transition to ensure meaningful lives. Ms. Geiger’s career in special education was inspired by her mother, who pursued deaf education at the University of Tulsa when Ms. Geiger was 8. Her mother volunteered with the speech and hearing services community and involved her children in her work, sparking Ms.

A hallmark of Ms. Geiger’s success is her ability to innovate. She is constantly thinking of ways to streamline processes, improve efficiency and support staff more effectively. Rarely wasting a minute of her day, she is known for being kind, listening well and working hard. She hopes she has earned her colleagues’ respect, something that is deeply important to her. Ms. Geiger is eyeing retirement as she approaches her 40th year in education. She aims to leave a legacy of stable systems behind so the work she has built will continue in her absence. Recognizing that transition must be part of every group in a school district, she believes success will come when programs value self-determination, student voices, transition planning tools, vocational programs that lead to paid employment, and the integration of all components needed for good outcomes. Geiger’s fascination with the deaf community and inspiring her to write school projects on the subject. Her career began in 1987 as an elementary teacher specializing in deaf education. After two years at the elementary level, Ms. Geiger moved up to the middle school level for another two years before teaching at the high school for eight years. During her time in the classroom, she observed changes in federal laws that increasingly focused on meaningful transitions for individuals with disabilities. Strongly believing in the importance of these transitions, she sought to learn more about effective transition strategies. Ms. Geiger recognized gaps in service delivery for transitioning students, believing it should focus on preparing them for adult life and aligning their educational goals with their aspirations. This belief is the foundation of her work as she empowers her staff to help students transition successfully into adulthood. Her approach

Since 2003, Dr. Chang has taught and supervised over 24,000 students, contributing over 94,000 credit hours, with graduates achieving professional success in their careers. Since 2006, she has served as director of distance education. Her work in curriculum, course design, faculty mentorship and instructional innovation has strengthened departmental and university standards. She contributed to undergraduate and graduate education and spearheaded a graduate TA training program, mentoring approximately 200 PhD students in pedagogy and practical teaching skills, many of whom received university teaching awards. She trains new faculty on Canvas, ensuring they succeed in academia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led workshops and transitioned to remote instruction, maintaining teaching excellence and supporting faculty and student success. A leader in online education, Dr. Chang designs courses aligned with rigorous standards. In 2024, her course earned both Global Quality Matters and Iowa State University High-Quality Certifications, making her the first in her department to achieve this distinction. She teaches chess to children ages 4 and up, manages grandmaster coaches, organizes chess tournaments, and plans and executes international chess exhibitions. Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley began teaching children chess while serving as the office manager and board member at Discovery Montessori School from 2007 to 2021. She first founded the Discovery Chess Learning Center in 2009 as a chess club. Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley views chess as a way of life rather than merely a sport or game, a belief that has contributed to her success. She is deeply motivated to provide the younger generation with a strong foundation for the future. Her commitment to women’s empowerment, particularly mentoring and supporting young female chess players, alongside her dedication to philanthropy, has been central to her achievements. In 2024, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley founded Chess for Cure, a nonprofit focused on advancing research in women’s gynecological health, especially ovarian and cervical cancers. Since its inception, the organization has raised approximately $36,000 for the Cleveland Clinic and $20,000 for City of Hope Hospital in Southern California. Chess for Cure hosts gala events the night before international chess tournaments, featuring speakers from both the medical and chess communities. It also recognizes women competitors with awards and prize money. Through chess, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley encourages others to be bold, embrace creativity and advocate for their beliefs. She is actively involved in the U.S. Chess Federation, serving on the nomination and women’s committees. She is also a board member for the Ohio Chess Congress and the Ohio Chess Scholastic Program. Most recently serving IPS Key Learning Community for 18 years until her retirement, she was instrumental in establishing the organization’s middle school and shaping the English initiative into the successful program it is recognized as today. Notably, the creative writing program flourished under Ms. Lively’s direction, enabling students to find unique books and learn to journal by expressing their thoughts and making comparisons. Prior to joining IPS Key Learning Community, Ms. Lively served as an adjunct professor in the English department at Indiana UniversityPurdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) from 1986 to 1993, where she also served as the associate faculty president. During her tenure, Ms. Lively participated in pioneering writing instruction that gained international recognition, even inspiring educational models in Thailand. She also led initiatives exploring diverse writing models and organized writing contests for students. After leaving IUPUI, Ms. Lively oversaw the editing of a journal publication that showcased the talents of both winners and runners-up. Previously, she spent 11 years in Catholic education and worked as a water-safety instructor and a house parent for juveniles, both of which prepared her to work with young students. Ms. Lively holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature and drama from the University of Evansville and a master’s degree from Indiana University. She attributes much of her success to a deep motivation to make a genuine difference in her students’ lives, as well as a strong conscience that has consistently driven her to act with purpose and integrity. Among her many career achievements, Ms. Lively is particularly proud of serving her faith through her invaluable work, having not only been a celebrated educator but also a passionate artist and musician. Beyond her current commitments, Ms. Lively manages a farm with her sister, continuing the values instilled by their mother, who always encouraged an active involvement in life. Rudolf has dedicated his life to community service and disability advocacy, culminating in his current role as a classroom paraeducator at Baltimore City Public Schools. Since 2007, he has helped students with disabilities achieve personal and academic success by assisting with personal hygiene, feeding, physical mobility and communication. Well-versed in physical therapy and occupational therapy activities, Mr. Rudolf also creates personalized educational resources tailored to each student’s individual needs. Although he has achieved many career milestones, Mr. Rudolf is particularly proud of the students under his tutelage who have gone on to graduate and secure employment, many of whom were initially deemed non-verbal or incapable of improvement. To this end, Mr. Rudolf is also grateful for his studies in applied behavior analysis, which have advanced his understanding of his students’ behavioral challenges. Earlier in his career, he served as a subcontractor to support platforms for students with disabilities, where he tracked individualized education programs (IEPs), attendance and behavior records. Concurrently, Mr. Rudolf serves as a real estate rental manager for Agapa Homes, the owner of the Geoffrey Real Estate Group, and the banquet captain and snack bar manager of the Rolling Road Golf Club. Through these appointments, he has exercised his leadership prowess and community engagement, having managed rental properties and operated a cleaning company that services Baltimore-based churches and synagogues. Likewise, Mr. Rudolf serves as the treasurer of the Blooming Beyond Barriers PTA and participates in regular KickAthon events for students with autism. Mr. Rudolf holds an AS in business management and an AA in business administration from the Community College of Baltimore County and is pursuing a BBA at Western Governors University. Looking toward the future, he endeavors to pursue a master’s degree in special education after completing his undergraduate degree. 14 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ACADEMIA, EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES CO-FOUNDER, VICE PRINCIPAL, OUTREACH DIRECTOR Winchester School of Chinese Culture Winchester, MA When her sons were old enough, Jennifer Zhang-Mckenna wanted them to learn Chinese, but she lacked the right environment to support it. Disappointed by local Chinese schools that relied on curricula she felt did not align with her values or modern teaching methods, she and two other mothers started their own. More than 20 years later, the Winchester School of Chinese Culture offers Chinese and bilingual courses, as well as extracurricular courses in subjects such as mathematics, painting, chess and fencing. Currently serving as vice principal and outreach director, Ms. ZhangMckenna previously served as principal. Under Ms. Zhang-Mckenna’s leadership, the school’s after-school program has grown from about 10 students to 200, with locations in multiple towns. The Sunday program has also expanded from 30 students to 700. Students regularly achieve high scores on the AP Chinese exam as early as ninth or 10th grade, a source of great pride. A committed community member, she also volunteers at the Winchester Senior Center, helping make programs more accessible to Chinese American seniors. She is dedicated to creating a strong sense of community and belonging among the Chinese community in her city. JENNIFER ZHANG-MCKENNA AUTHOR, TEACHER Hillsborough County Public Schools Tampa, FL WILLIAM “BILL” SEFEKAR Few educators can say they have taught every grade and subject, but William “Bill” Sefekar has – all while incorporating guitars, books and other elements into his lessons. However, this is only the start of Mr. Sefekar’s creativity, which extends to producing original songs, a popular YouTube channel and his third forthcoming book. Through “It Worked 4 Me,” Mr. Sefekar aims to offer insights into his life and the driving forces that have shaped his personal and professional journey. The book follows “American Dreamer: A Look into the Life of My Father, Joe Baby,” written after his father’s 2014 passing. Mr. Sefekar worked meticulously to compile his father’s legacy, and the book serves as a heartfelt tribute to him. Mr. Sefekar’s first book, “Light: Courage and Hope,” recounts the inspiring stories of the 10 nations that played a crucial role in saving the Jewish people during the Holocaust. As a Holocaust survivor himself, the book garnered significant attention, leading to a reception at the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC. Additionally, he maintains a strong rapport with former students through his YouTube channel, featuring 60 broadcasts and 130 musical recordings.

Stephen Cantrill is fortunate to have had two fulfilling careers he has enjoyed immensely: a first act in civil service and a second in real estate. Mr. Cantrill is an associate broker with ERA Young Realty & Investment in Payson, Arizona, a small town of about 16,000 residents. He entered the real estate business in 1997 when he was in his mid-50s and has now spent almost 30 years in this role. He values the flexibility of the work, as well as the community connections it has enabled him to form. Additionally, Mr. Cantrill was president of his own real estate firm, Realty Executives, Payson & the Pines, from 2002 to 2008. At this point in his career, he is focused on serving current and soon-to-be retirees, supporting those who need help reaching their housing goals in their golden years. Since becoming an agent, Mr. Cantrill has been a member of the Central Arizona Association of Realtors, serving on its board of directors for more than 20 years. He has been treasurer since 2024, a voluntary position that involves leading the finance committee and helping plan the annual budget. The association holds monthly membership meetings, funds educational initiatives, and organizes charity events throughout the year, including Thanksgiving meal deliveries. Mr. Cantrill values honesty and integrity above all else and has strived to maintain these qualities throughout his life. He also possesses strong negotiation skills, which have been essential as a real estate agent and in his previous work. He is known for being level-headed and managing issues with facts, not conflict. Mr. Cantrill’s first career began as an intern trainee right out of college with the U.S. Department of Defense. Over 27 years, he advanced through the ranks to the Senior Executive Service, supporting the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and Defense Logistics Agency at various locations across the country. He takes pride in having worked his way up through the department from an internship to hold leadership positions in government operations. Mr. Cantrill served as the director of contracts at the Resolution Trust

Since becoming a real estate agent, he has also earned his real estate license, a certification as a residential specialist, and the designation of graduate of the REALTOR® Institute from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). Mr. Cantrill is a deeply committed community volunteer. He is a member of the Masonic Shrine Club and has served as president four times. He is also active in the town’s Rotary Club and was selected as president in 2012. Additionally, Mr. Cantrill cooks a monthly meal at the local Elks Lodge and participates in fundraising events for the Humane Society and Rim Country Artists. In a unique and significant feat, Mr. Cantrill has ridden his motorcycle from coast to coast, covering 48 states and approximately half a million miles through the BMW National Club. Along the way, he has seen such memorable sites as Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon and Colorado’s Million Dollar Highway. Alaska and Europe remain on his bucket list. Corporation’s Valley Forge office, where he managed complex contractual agreements. During his tenure, he was elected president of the National Contract Management Association chapters in Ohio and Arizona. Mr. Cantrill is also a veteran, having been drafted in 1969 to serve in the Vietnam War. He was a team leader in fire direction control in Army artillery, calculating firing solutions for a howitzer battery. He considers the responsibility he bore to be a meaningful achievement and a source of great pride. Mr. Cantrill’s service was recently recognized through an opportunity to participate in the Honor Flight program, a nonprofit program that flies veterans to Washington, DC, to visit monuments and explore the city. The organization covers all expenses for the threeday trip and is open to all military veterans. Early in his professional life, Mr. Cantrill spent 10 years as an instructor at the University of Phoenix, where he earned a master’s degree in organizational management with a focus on business in 1991. He previously received

Chad Forbes found his inspiration on his high school yearbook staff. Under his English teacher's instruction, he discovered his passion for graphic design and gained experience that significantly contributed to his creative and professional development. This passion is the foundation of a successful career in signage manufacturing. Mr. Forbes is a project manager at Brown Enterprises, a position he has held since 2010. In this role, he meets with clients, assesses their interior or exterior signage needs, and ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Projects include room and wayfinding signage in hospitals and corporate office buildings. He also procures engineered drawings and permits and confirms that outdoor signs comply with city codes. Known for demonstrating a strong work ethic, Mr. Forbes consistently approaches his work with diligence and professionalism. Due to his likable nature, he maintains positive relationships with clients and takes the time to understand their needs. When issues arise, he helps clients navigate challenges, resolve concerns efficiently, and identify solutions that align with both budgetary and design requirements. Mr. Forbes applied these skills to a nationwide signage changeover for a bank headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, where his company is located. The project covered more than 65 locations across the country and called for coordinated execution across 16 states within a three-month period to meet banking compliance requirements. A total of 3,165 different signs were designed and produced for this project, including exterior and interior office signage, nameplates and building logos. Throughout his time at Brown Enterprises, Mr. Forbes has played an essential role in managing client relationships and overseeing complex signage projects. He is committed to supporting the organization’s continued growth by mentoring and developing the next generation of industry professionals. In the next five to 10 years, he aspires to assume an expanded Millennium Magazine Featured Listee

In addition to his profession, Mr. Forbes has a long history of community involvement. A former Eagle Scout, he now supports his sons’ Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops. He also donates to various veterans’ organizations and has participated in fundraising initiatives for the American Cancer Society by kayaking from Miami to Key West. One year, his efforts raised approximately $25,000 for the nonprofit. Mr. Forbes is drawn to causes where donations create tangible impact. Mr. Borgemeister has over 40 years of experience as a designer and architect, most of it spent in Providence, Rhode Island. From 2000 to 2024, he was self-employed, focusing on designing adaptive reuse and preservation projects. Additionally, he managed architectural restoration and renovation efforts and consulted on affordable housing development. Mr. Borgemeister began his career as a carpenter in 1970, then became a licensed architect in 1993. His passion and natural ability for architectural drawing, combined with his carpentry skills, have led to a life doing what he loves. Along the way, he worked on some of Rhode Island’s landmarks, including the Narragansett Towers and the Beavertail Lighthouse and Museum. Despite these successes, the highlight of Mr. Borgemeister’s career came in the early 1980s through his involvement with SWAP (Stop Wasting Abandoned Property).
