Earlier in his career, Mr. Reed contributed to Energy Northwest (formerly the Washington Public Power Supply System) at the Columbia Nuclear Station. Holding the position of corporate emergency planning, safety and health officer, he managed three departments – the emergency planning group, the industry safety group and the occupational health group – ensuring each program met all NRC, FEMA and OSHA regulatory requirements, as well as state and local policies. Beginning in the 1980s, Mr. Reed owned and operated a consulting firm for 10 years that provided guidance on all aspects of nuclear plant operations and radiological emergency response planning. Mr. Reed formerly served in the United States Navy for six years at the rank of E6 first-class machinist mate aboard nuclear submarines, qualifying on all operational stations from reactor operator to engineering watch supervisor. During his military service, he earned numerous accolades and letters of commendation from the commander of the Atlantic Fleet. Similarly, in the civilian nuclear industry, he has received acclaim from the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations for developing emergency preparedness and quality assurance policies and from the National Standards Institute for his contributions to industry- wide nuclear quality assurance standards. Highly educated, Mr. Reed, in addition to his military and industrial training, holds a BS in nuclear technology from Pacific Western University. Beyond his professional duties, he is a respected author whose published works include “Happiness is a Cool Reactor” and “The Real Night Order Book,” both registered with the Library of Congress. George J. Reed draws on 40 years of professional expertise in nuclear energy and emergency planning, culminating in his most recent role as nuclear manager, engineer and nuclear operations overseer at the Salem-Hope Creek Nuclear Power Station in New Jersey.
