118 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine JAMES TYRRELL PRINCIPAL, LITIGATION DEPARTMENT VICE CHAIR Bressler, Amery & Ross, P.C. Essex Falls, NJ James Tyrrell knew in elementary school that he wanted to be a lawyer. To make this dream come true, he would become the first member of his family to attend college. Following his father’s advice to acquire a skill that no one can take away, Mr. Tyrrell has spent five decades building a career that has earned him recognition as one of the best litigators in the country. Mr. Tyrrell is a principal and vice chairman of the litigation department at Bressler, Amery & Ross, P.C., a role in which he helps guide the strategic direction of the firm’s litigation practice. He also advises leadership on investments in talent development and on innovative approaches that meet clients’ evolving needs. This appointment is the culmination of a distinguished career that has placed Mr. Tyrrell at the forefront of some of the most well-known and high-profile legal cases. Perhaps most notably, in the mid-2000s, he represented the city of New York and 150 of its contractors in more than 10,000 lawsuits alleging personal injury and property damage arising from debris removal and cleanup operations at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 attacks. His firm was selected from among the nation’s top 30 toxic tort law firms. Mr. Tyrrell also represented Monsanto in the famous – or infamous – Agent Orange case of the early 1980s, in which thousands of Vietnam War veterans and their families accused the company of lacing a jungle defoliant with toxic chemicals. He later defended Monsanto’s spin-off company, Solutia, against other toxic chemical claims. Additionally, Mr. Tyrrell was the lead litigator for SEACOR, owner of the ocean-going fireboats that extinguished fires on the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform. SEACOR employees alleged exposure to harmful chemicals during the firefighting and cleanup efforts. In another landmark case, Mr. Tyrrell was selected from among the top national law firms to serve as chief trial counsel for Lucent Technologies, AT&T and Avaya in multiple classaction lawsuits related to the Y2K phenomenon. About 80,000 business phone system customers alleged that their products stopped working correctly after the turn of the millennium. LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT
