128 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine MEDICINE, HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS THOMAS LEWIS MATTHEW, MD CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON ThedaCare Regional Medical Center Appleton, WI Dr. Thomas Lewis Matthew always desired a career in which he could help others, inspired in part by his father, a successful neurosurgeon. As one of the first Black neurosurgeons trained in the United States, Dr. Matthew’s father also founded a nonprofit organization to help underprivileged Harlem citizens develop essential job skills and secure employment. Leveraging his father’s immense influence, Dr. Matthew decided to emulate his commitment to helping others. Since 2024, he has thrived as a cardiothoracic surgeon at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Appleton, Wisconsin. Earlier in his career, Dr. Matthew served as the director of the Johns Hopkins Cardiothoracic Surgery program at Suburban Hospital in Washington, DC, from 2017 to 2024. During his tenure, he successfully assumed the directorship following the previous director’s departure and helped the department become a fully staffed surgical unit, rising from a small, skeletal staff to a flourishing department. As a result of Dr. Matthew’s efforts and those of his team, Suburban Hospital became one of the most significant providers of cardiothoracic surgery in the Washington, DC, area. Dr. Matthew notes that his experiences at Suburban Hospital provided him with invaluable resources and opportunities that he continues to leverage to the present day. Previously, Dr. Matthew spent significant time in various cardiothoracic units at other clinics and medical centers across the nation. A past codirector of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgical Services at Boulder Community Hospital in Colorado, he also served as co-director of the Cardiovascular Service Line at the Medical Center of the Rockies and founded Boulder Valley Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Moreover, Dr. Matthew served with Longmont United Hospital in Boulder, Colorado, and was chief of medical staff and the medical director of the Progressive Open Heart Unit at Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He also directed the cardiac intensive care unit and was a partner at Louisville Heart Surgery. Highly educated, Dr. Matthew first earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in 1981.
