In 2015, he traveled to King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda to collaborate with a Bostonbased team to replace heart valves in patients with rheumatic heart disease. Following these poignant experiences, Dr. Matthew co-authored “Ethical Precepts for Medical Volunteerism: Including Local Voices and Values to Guide RHD Surgery in Rwanda.” As a testament to his success, Dr. Matthew has been honored on several occasions. A multipletime inductee into Top Doctors by Washingtonian Magazine between 2019 and 2024, he also earned the Multicultural Award from the City of Boulder and has been named among America’s Top Doctors and Regional Top Doctors by Castle Connolly. Notably, he is a fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Surgeons. Thereafter, he attended the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating with an MD in 1985. During his medical training, Dr. Matthew served as a general surgery resident and later became chief resident in thoracic cardiovascular surgery at the University of Virginia, having secured a research fellowship and a Ford Foundation grant. Admitted to practice by the American Board of Surgery in 1993, Dr. Matthew was also certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 1995. Throughout his career, Dr. Matthew has dedicated his time, expertise and resources to community-based programs. As a current board member of a nonprofit organization, he helps address the prevalence of chronic inflammatory response syndrome, a recently recognized illness affecting many populations worldwide.
