With a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory, Ms. Marsh’s professional opera debut came at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, when she opened the festival singing Desdemona in Verdi’s “Otello.” Her American opera debut followed with the San Francisco Opera as Pamina in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” The return to her native San Francisco came on the heels of Ms. Marsh’s most esteemed achievement as the first singer in history to win the gold medal at the legendary International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. She had been invited by the White House to represent the U.S. in the competition. It was the first year the vocal category was added. Performances at the world’s most notable opera, concert, recital, radio, television and festival venues followed. Ms. Marsh was honored with the Handel Medallion, New York City’s highest award recognizing contributions to the city’s intellectual and cultural life, and she was invited to perform at the White House by former President Lyndon Johnson. Ms. Marsh appeared on Art Buchwald’s Show, Merv Griffin’s Show, Mike Douglas’ Show, Johnny Carson’s Show, Bell Telephone Hour, BBC Television, and all major radio and television venues in Europe. She also performed on U.S. variety shows with stars such as Bing Crosby, Sid Caesar, George Burns, Red Skelton, Dinah Shore, Joan Fontaine and James Robertson Justice. Ms. Marsh has received numerous accolades, including being named to the International Who’s Who in Classical Music, Woman of the Year by Mademoiselle Magazine, the National 4-H Club of America Merit Award in Horsemanship, the Presidential Honor Award of Distinction, and Achievement Awards from Time-Life and U.S. News & World Report. She holds keys to the cities of New York and San Francisco.
