137 Millennium - Twenty-third Edition MEDICINE, HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS A clinical pharmacist by training, Dr. Wendi Carroll uses her expertise to assist small- to mid-sized biotech startups with product development, particularly in the rare disease space. Through this work, she brings clarity to complex situations for the benefit of patients. Dr. Carroll is the founder and president of Carroll & Morrisette Consulting LLC. In this role, she works at the intersection of clinical development, rare disease, and healthcare policy, helping early- and small-biotech companies design lean, disciplined strategies that succeed beyond regulatory approval. Dr. Carroll’s services are unique, built upon 20 years of industry leadership. Drug development can be a demanding, challenging field. Her experience has given her a distinctive ability to cut through the noise, identify the core issue and bring everyone together to solve it efficiently. An array of early roles at Amgen Inc. from 1993 to 2007 gave Dr. Carroll a robust foundation in her field. She then advanced through the company, serving in director positions for global study management, risk management operations and clinical development over the next eight years. In 2016, Dr. Carroll joined BioMarin as the senior director and head of global medical affairs study management. Under her leadership, the department transformed into a global center of excellence for medical affairs evidence generation. The team grew from eight members to 25, with staff located in the United States, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London and Latin America. Uniting these regions was crucial to making a meaningful impact on patients living with rare diseases. Dr. Carroll’s career has taken her through every phase of drug development, providing her with a broad perspective to guide and support others. Her experience working in Europe for a U.S.-based company offered invaluable exposure to diverse business practices, cultures and ways of life, which inform how she connects with her clients. Dr. Carroll encourages others to work overseas if given the opportunity, as doing so offers valuable lessons in collaborating effectively with both international teams and U.S.-based colleagues.
