Knowing his photographs also have a compelling story to tell, he uses his work to breathe life into an inspirational speaking career that has captivated audiences worldwide. Mr. Uzzell’s love for photography began not with a drive to create beautiful images, but with a fascination for gadgets. As a child, his mother would secretly let him use his father’s camera, a device he was otherwise forbidden from touching. In high school, his biology teacher encouraged him to fully lean into his talent. And when his physics teacher told him he could not achieve certain results with a camera, Mr. Uzzle considered it a challenge. What followed is a distinguished 54-year career in photography and visual storytelling. Since 1975, Mr. Uzzell has gained notoriety as a photographer, inspirational speaker, videographer and cinematographer through his company, Steve Uzzell Productions. He spends six months of the year traveling the world for his clients. The rest of the year, Mr. Uzzell delivers rousing presentations to a wide range of clients across industries, including Campbell’s® Soup, Deloitte, Merrill Lynch and the United States Probation Office. One talk, “The Nature of Transition,” aims to help organizations navigate the inevitable shifts they all face, using his photographs as striking visuals. In Mr. Uzzell’s foundational presentation, “Open Roads Open Minds – An Exploration of Creative Problem Solving,” his images serve as a metaphor for possibility and creativity, inspiring audiences to make any venture an adventure. In 2014, he turned the presentation into a book. While Mr. Uzzell did not set out to become a keynote speaker, he has delivered more than 655 talks to over 500 organizations in all 50 U.S. states and six other countries. All told, more than 700,000 people have attended one of his presentations. Mr. Uzzell began his career as an assistant to the editor at the National Geographic Society before advancing to a staff photographer position. He continues to produce editorialstyle photography projects on topics such as chronicling research into Huntington’s disease with a neurologist in Venezuela.
