11 ACADEMIA, EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley is the president, executive director and head coach at Discovery Chess Learning Academy, which she founded in 2011. She teaches chess to children ages 4 and up, manages grandmaster coaches, organizes chess tournaments, and plans and executes international chess exhibitions. Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley began teaching children chess while serving as the office manager and board member at Discovery Montessori School from 2007 to 2021. She first founded the Discovery Chess Learning Center in 2009 as a chess club. Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley views chess as a way of life rather than merely a sport or game, a belief that has contributed to her success. She is deeply motivated to provide the younger generation with a strong foundation for the future. Her commitment to women’s empowerment, particularly mentoring and supporting young female chess players, alongside her dedication to philanthropy, has been central to her achievements. In 2024, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley founded Chess for Cure, a nonprofit focused on advancing research in women’s gynecological health, especially ovarian and cervical cancers. Since its inception, the organization has raised approximately $36,000 for the Cleveland Clinic and $20,000 for City of Hope Hospital in Southern California. Chess for Cure hosts gala events the night before international chess tournaments, featuring speakers from both the medical and chess communities. It also recognizes women competitors with awards and prize money. Through chess, Ms. Kanapathy-Bagley encourages others to be bold, embrace creativity and advocate for their beliefs. She is actively involved in the U.S. Chess Federation, serving on the nomination and women’s committees. She is also a board member for the Ohio Chess Congress and the Ohio Chess Scholastic Program. Kalanithi Kanapathy-Bagley’s career is grounded in strong values instilled by her parents. A priority on female leadership and community outreach has profoundly influenced her lifelong commitment to empowering women and ensuring everyone is taken care of. While this work is not a game, it has been made possible through the game of chess.
