Mr. Morgan then played at Idaho State University, completing a bachelor’s degree in mass communications. As a player, he was recognized as Player of the Year and earned All-Conference honors. He was inducted into the Idaho State Sports Hall of Fame in 2023 and returned to the university in 2025 as a commencement speaker. Mr. Morgan considers this last honor a significant achievement, as it recognized his accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom. From 1995 to 1999, Mr. Morgan played basketball internationally, giving him the opportunity to travel around the world. He ended his career at UMFN Njardvik in Iceland’s Division I. Given his experience as a basketball player, he knew children would look up to him, just as he had looked up to stars like Michael Jordan growing up. Mr. Morgan served as the head men’s basketball coach at Umpqua Community College from 2002 to 2009, bringing him back to his first alma mater. In this position, he became the first African American coach in the county. He returned to coaching in 2017 as the head boys basketball coach at Parkrose High School in Portland, a role he held until 2025. After 25 years in his profession, Mr. Morgan remains motivated to help young people realize their potential and become active members of their communities. His fulfillment comes from helping them set a path to success, fostering selfbelief, and encouraging them to hold themselves accountable for their growth and achievements. Looking toward the future, Mr. Morgan aims to build a community center for the Elevate Oregon program and its services, offering a safe space for families and students. He also plans to write a book about vision and service, continuing to use his voice, influence and gifts to positively impact others. nonprofit in 2016 as program director, following a stint as vice principal of Self Enhancement Inc. (SEI). It was this position that brought him to Portland and first connected him with the community. SEI supports students through in-school, after-school, summer and postgraduation programs. It also offers energy bill assistance, housing support and empowerment programs to help families thrive. During his time with the organization, Mr. Morgan continued his work inspiring young people. Prior to this role, Mr. Morgan served as program director at the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound for three years. He also worked to open two Boys & Girls Clubs in his hometown of Tacoma. He has previous experience as a teacher at the Phoenix School of Roseburg in Oregon. As a former high school and college athlete, Mr. Morgan knew that sports could be another essential way to connect with young people. He developed a love for basketball in high school and then played at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, where he earned an associate degree
