Escondido, CA Artificial intelligence (AI) may be dominating the conversation today, but building an AI-driven business in 2018 was considered somewhat risky. Yet that is exactly what Sonia Talati did when she co-founded HereAfter AI, a company that used AI storytelling to help families preserve their values and insights. While HereAfter AI gained significant attention and news coverage, Ms. Talati was ultimately a visionary ahead of her time. She ultimately departed the company to hone her expertise before launching Heirlooms Inc. in 2024. Her timing may be spot on now, as user trust in AI continues to grow. Ms. Talati has been at the forefront of AI since 2017. As a professional journalist and storyteller, she wrote for Barron’s about affluent families and the role of storytelling in preserving their legacies. This sparked a curiosity about how AI could address the challenge of capturing and preserving family narratives, and her company was born. Through the Heirloom app, AI interviews users and organizes the collected narratives into a searchable digital archive that can then be synthesized and refined. Ms. Talati’s company is grounded in more than seven years of journalism work and later experience leading AI initiatives at major corporations, including Anthem, GoDaddy and GEICO. Using AI to help her own family preserve its identity and legacy, she recognized a gap where artificial intelligence and value-driven storytelling could intersect. Ms. Talati began her career as an intern for an investigative journalist who produced Peabody Award-winning stories, as well as a host at Napa Valley TV and a reporter at KTTC TV and Chambers Communications. In 2013, she joined The Wall Street Journal as an intern and researcher under Dow Jones before becoming a digital project manager at McClatchy Media one year later. While with The Wall Street Journal, she created one of the first multimedia narrative storytelling pieces, integrating videos, infographics and articles.
