Four of her six sisters worked in healthcare, one brother was an X-ray technician, and her two other brothers were police officers. Strongly influenced by her family’s dedication to service, she began her financial career in a hospital before moving into positions within city governments. Over more than four decades, Ms. Vela built a distinguished career in accounting and government finance. She retired in 2023 and transitioned into a freelance role, bolstered by her solid reputation. Ms. Vela most recently served as the finance director for the City of Fair Oaks Ranch in Texas. Her responsibilities included overseeing various departments, including payroll, accounts payable, budgeting and finance. She prepared monthly financial reports, oversaw daily cash transactions, managed investments and implemented internal controls. She also handled cash and all purchases. Ms. Vela held finance director positions for the cities of Ingleside, San Marcos, Richardson and Corpus Christi, Texas. She is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association of Texas (GFOAT) and received its Award for Excellence in financial management and reporting. She was also honored with the Texas A&M Corpus Christi College of Business Alumni Excellence Award, having earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the university. Between her city government positions, Ms. Vela served as Central Health’s controller. She was also the director of accounting for Spohn Hospital for two years. She attributes her successful career largely to her family, noting that her mother and husband were a significant source f support. Ms. Vela is an active volunteer with CHRISTUS Health, serving as the president of its Volunteers Association. Her service enables her to connect with patients, and she organizes gifts for the children of associates who are facing challenges. Additionally, she sits on the board of directors for the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Foundation. She provides scholarships to students and enjoys attending scholarship banquets, where she can meet recipients. Ms. Vela considers her volunteerism to be vital.
