126 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING HSIEN-LUNG “JIM” YANG FORMER HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT Applied Materials San Jose, CA People with smartphones rarely stop to think about how they work. However, by removing the chips inside, the phones become useless blocks. People also typically fail to consider where the chips come from, but there are real individuals behind these innovations – individuals like Hsien-Lung “Jim” Yang. Throughout his career, Mr. Yang has invented and developed hundreds of chip manufacturing processes for Apple phones. His expertise lies in product development, and he has also developed both hardware and processes for physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and plasma etching. These processes are essential to the manufacturing of microprocessors and memory chips. A native of Taiwan, Mr. Yang holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science and information engineering from National Taiwan University. He lived in the United States from 1999 to 2014, during which he completed a Master of Science in electrical engineering and computer science at Cornell University. He served as a product development engineer, key account technologist and business manager at Applied Materials in California beginning in 2002. Between 2014 and 2023, Mr. Yang held positions in Taiwan and China, working at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Wavetek Microelectronics Corporation, Yangtze Memory Technologies and Wonik IPS Co. Ltd. During this time, he advanced into senior leadership positions at the companies before returning to the U.S. to take a senior manager role at ASMA in Phoenix in 2023. That same year, he rejoined Applied Materials as the director of process engineering. Mr. Yang served as the former head of technology development for Applied Materials. With more than 23 years of engineering experience, he has contributed to numerous technological innovations in the industry. He takes great pride in his expertise and the impact his work has made.
