She was barely old enough to enlist, yet she was inspired by her brother’s positive experience in the program. It was a way for her to earn a bachelor’s degree, but it also helped her discover a passion that would guide her future work. In the Ready Reserve, Ms. Johnston stumbled into the field of advanced medicine. She then transitioned to the regular army, beginning as an advanced medic and later serving as a nursing officer. Over the course of her 11 years of service, she received several awards, including the Soldier’s Medallion for Exemplary Service. She also changed her educational focus to a bachelor’s degree in nursing. This was the beginning of Ms. Johnston’s multifaceted career path. In 2005, she established FulcrumTRG as a managing director and training facilitator, overseeing company operations for 10 years. This leadership experience was instrumental as she moved into a career in healthcare, serving in senior operational leadership roles at UnitingCare Queensland. Ms. Johnston next advanced to the position of cardiac services manager at Mater Public-Private Hospital in Brisbane in 2020. She specialized in cardiac catheter theaters, which involved high-risk, high-acuity procedures. As a senior registered nurse, she often provided support and even guidance to specialists. Around this time, Ms. Johnston began working toward a Master of Business Administration. She has long desired to pursue an advanced degree to expand her knowledge and skills in leadership. Her goal was to develop a wellrounded foundation to lead the departments she oversaw effectively. Through this experience, she learned that numerous skills are transferable across fields, particularly in leadership roles.
