235 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A pronounced figure in the fields of academia, mathematics and information technology, James J. Sherin retired in 2003 after more than 40 years of experience in his industry. He worked at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health Systems as a UNIX systems administrator from 1997 to 2003. During his tenure as a UNIX systems administrator, he worked on more than 40 SUN and IBM UNIX platforms of all sizes, thereby establishing his prominence in his field. He has since served as a part-time instructor at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in his retirement from the computer industry. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, Mr. Sherin served such entities as Thrift Drug, Inc., as a systems administrator and Westinghouse Electric Corporation as a systems programmer, user consultant, manager and project leader. Additionally, he served Cray Research, Inc., as a presales analyst and at Control Data Corporation as an onsite analyst and analyst-in-charge. Earlier in his career, he taught mathematics and drafting in the Rochester Area School District and was a journeyman programmer for the United States Steel Corporation. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, with a minor in history and engineering, from Geneva College in 1962, Mr. Sherin took classes towards a master’s degree from Duquesne University. Civically involved as well, he served as a volunteer scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, who bestowed upon him a Wood Badge and a Silver Beaver Award. Furthermore, he has run raffles through his local church. Mr. Sherin attributes his success to his ability to communicate with others, as well as his terrific memory in terms of numbers andmathematics. He notes that he entered the field of information technology after teaching high school mathematics, due in part to a tour he completed in the 1960s at Jones and Laughlin Steel Company, which intrigued him enough to enter the industry.
