27 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT “Holy Literary License: The Almighty Chooses Fallible Mortals to Write, Edit and Translate GodStory.” To support and inform his vocation, Mr. Flynn taught at Gardner-Webb College for two years, returned to his alma mater, Baylor University, as a professor for four years between 1959 and 1963, and was novelist-in- residence at Trinity University from 1963 to 2001. The story collection “Seasonal Rain” received the Southwest Booksellers Award, and the title story of “Living with the Hyenas” received a Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. “Wanderer Springs” received a Spur Award from Western Writers of America; “Echoes of Glory” received a second Spur Award; and “North to Yesterday” received a Wrangler Award and was named one of the Best Books of the Year by The New York Times and True Magazine. Mr. Flynn, a former Marine, sent a clipping of True’s review to the editor of True with a note requesting an assignment as a reporter in Vietnam. True said yes. The magazine failed before any of Mr. Flynn’s stories were published, but the stories he wrote about the Combined Unit Pacification Program, Second Battalion Fifth Marine Regiment, were published as “A Personal War in Vietnam” and the stories that were not published informed “The Last Klick,” a Vietnam novel. Mr. Flynn also wrote a stage adaptation of William Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying.” The play, directed by Paul Baker and presented by the Dallas Theater Center, was selected as the American entry at the Theater of Nation’s competition in Paris, where it received a Special Jury Award. Mr. Flynn is a member of PEN, a past president and fellow of the Texas Institute of Letters, and was inducted into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame.
