129 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION with the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. Dr. Syropoulos’ career began in 1960 with the Detroit Public Schools. Starting off as a teacher, he became department head in 1966, acting supervisor in 1967, research assistant in 1969, assistant director in 1975 and program associate in 1976. Dr. Syropoulos has also been serving as the president of Research & Evaluation Specialists, Inc., since 1997. He was a charter school consultant at Central Michigan University from 1997 to 2004 and a consultant at the Wayne RESA from 2004 to 2008. Notably, he worked with the Michigan Department of Education as a principal coach and schools improvement plans consultant from 2006 until his retirement in 2017. Working in the school system for nearly 60 years, Dr. Syropoulos always felt a connection to young people. He saw teaching as a way to give back in exchange for those who helped him during his time of need. He has also helped students by distributing more than $6 million in scholarships over the course of his career. Highlights of Dr. Syropoulos’ career include receiving the Hellenic Heritage Award from the Greek Community of Michigan and the Lifetime Achievement Award for state and federal projects. He also received six national and international awards for his work at Detroit Public Schools in the research and development department of the American Research Association. Dr. Syropoulos is a member of the National Education Foundation, Michigan Educational Research Association and American Hellenic Education Progressive Association, where he recently served as supreme governor from 1998 to 2000. Civically, he is a past president of the Saint John Greek Orthodox Church and external vice president of the Hellenic Society Paideia. D r. Mike Syropoulos arrived to the United States after being displaced from his native Greece, and despite hardships, built a promising career for himself within the Michigan educational system. He received a BA in 1960, an MEd in 1965 and an EdD in 1971, all from Wayne State University.
