34 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W ith a longstanding interest in journalism and politics, Thelma Mossman LeBrecht attended the University of Florida, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism in 1967. She has had an exhilarating career in reporting, covering high profile and historical events such as the Timothy McVeigh trial in Denver and every presidential campaign and national convention from 1984 through the primaries in 2004. She also reported from Capitol Hill, the Pentagon, the White House and the State Department. She reported from the Pentagon for both Gulf Wars and on September 11, 2001. Ms. LeBrecht retired from the Associated Press Broadcast News Center in 2004 after 23 years of reporting for the coveted news outlet. She was an AP senior correspondent, where she notably covered the D.C. sniper shootings. Previously, she was an editor at ABC Radio Networks in NewYork City from 1980 to 1981 and a reporter for KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia from 1976 to 1980. Ms. LeBrecht was a public affairs reporter for WBT and WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 1967 to 1972. Ms. LeBrecht speaks highly of her time being a public affairs reporter because she was proud that her work was able to shine light on issues in the community, thus bringing about necessary action. When Ms. LeBrecht was in Charlotte, she was a voice for the Cherokee community’s needs, and when she was in Philadelphia, she worked on a story regarding asbestos in schools and cleanup efforts. As expected from her important work, Ms. LeBrecht was the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award and the Oliver S. Gramling Distinguished Reporter Award from the Associated Press. Ms. LeBrecht is also proud of her achievements as chair of Congressional Radio and Television Correspondents Association in the U.S. Capitol from 1991 to 1992. Additionally, Ms. LeBrecht sat on the board of directors of the Washington Press Club Foundation from 1995 to 2004. She was married to the late Don LeBrecht, a pioneer in the broadcasting industry, whom she credits as an everlasting pillar of support during her reporting career.
