35 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Verna May Linzey was best known for her television programs, “The Holy Spirit Today” and “The Word with Dr. Verna Linzey.” She touched the lives of millions of people along with her evangelistic crusades of up to 80,000 around the world. Her hit album, “Oh Blessed Jesus,” went Gold for ‘Best Vocals in Southern Gospel Music.’ As a prolific songwriter, she wrote the title song. She had one of the leading roles in the movie ‘Iniquity,’ which re-enacts the story of David and Bathsheba in a modern American urban setting, which was released in 2012. As an actress and minister, her poise, charm and wit comprised the charisma that drew crowds to her. Public speaking was innate for Dr. Linzey, and so when she was given her start in the 1930s by her brother Franklin Hall to sing and speak in some of the crusades he conducted across America, she accepted and eventually drew her own crowds. Dr. Linzey mastered biblical languages at Southwestern Assembly of God University between 1937 and 1939, completed the DMin program at Fuller Theological Seminary in 1980, and received an honorary DD from Kingsway University and Theological Seminary in 2001. Dr. Linzey made full use of her education as the chief editor of the New Tyndale Version Bible translation (2009) and as one of the translators of the Modern English Version Bible translation (2014). Growing up in a minister’s home, Dr. Linzey felt a strong connection to her faith, which equipped her for leadership in the performing arts and religion. Consequently, she spoke at the 2011 Leadership Summit at the Heritage Foundation and was presented the Leader of the Year Award. She also received the National Bible Teacher Award at Westminster Theological Seminary in California during National Bible Week in 2011. Dr. Linzey founded the Military Bible Association as a means for impacting military personnel. She also wrote “The Baptism with the Holy Spirit,” for which she received the Best Non-Fiction of the Year Award in 2006 from the Christian Writers’ Guild. Recently celebrated for what would have been her 101st birthday, Dr. Linzey is survived by her numerous children, including renowned minister Dr. James F. Linzey.
