Her private practice is in Manhattan, but she also practices online and by phone. She has been the founder and executive director of the Object Relations Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis since 1991. Obtaining her PhD in clinical psychology from the Gordon Derner Institute at Adelphi University in 1974, she has been a certified clinical psychologist since 1975. She graduated from the National Institute for the Psychotherapies for psychoanalytic training in 1981, where she also taught and supervised. She taught in the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health, where she served as supervisor for psychotherapists in 1985. Dr. Kavaler-Adler has published six books and over 70 articles. She has earned 16 awards for her books, including the 2004 Gradiva Award for “Mourning, Spirituality and Psychic Change...” Sitting on the editorial board of the International Journal of Controversial Discussions, she is a fellow of the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis. Kono is a nursing educator with decades of professional experience. To prepare for her career, she attended Mercy Hospital in her youth, where she earned a diploma in 1962. From there, she obtained a BSN from Marycrest College in 1977 and subsequently completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. At the inception of her career in 1962, Ms. Kono served as head nurse of mental health at St. Thomas Mercy Hospital. In 1965, she served as head nurse of mental health at St. Luke’s Hospital. She went on to spend a significant portion of her career as a child therapist at the Vera French Mental Health Center, and was a nurse manager of the mental health unit at Genesis Health System in West Davenport. Prior to her retirement in 2005, she was a clinical instructor at Eastern Iowa Community College. Ms. Kono is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the Iowa Nurses Association, where she served as a member of the board of directors and as District 6 president.
