110 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING Always boasting a curious mind, the late Dr. Richard V. Shanklin III was a renowned mechanical engineer and consultant who accrued nearly 60 years of experience prior to his passing in 2018. Serving as a consultant for the final three years of his career, he previously excelled in myriad engineering roles with such companies as BDM Federal Inc., the U.S. Synthetic Fuels Corporation, TRW Inc., Systems Research Laboratories, J.B. Dicks & Associates Inc., the Boeing Company and Phillips Petroleum Company. Notably, Dr. Shanklin also served the MHD Division of the Energy Research and Development Administration in Washington, D.C., between 1975 and 1979, in which he was the director of the department and responsible for the program development of commercial magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) power generation. During his tenure there, he participated in the creation and negotiation of an international cooperative agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy and the Soviet Union’s High Temperature Institute. Prior to the inception of his career, Dr. Shanklin pursued a formal education at Duke University, whereupon he received a BS in mechanical engineering in 1959. Following this achievement, he earned an MS in mechanical engineering andaPhD, both fromtheUniversityof Tennessee in1965and1971, respectively. While at Duke University, he was inducted into the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Shanklin involved himself with the design, test and evaluation of mechanical and energy-related technologies, as well as lent his expertise to college-level instruction for undergraduate and graduate students. An expert in MHD power generation, he authored or co-authored more than 30 papers in the field. In light of his achievements, he was inducted into Sigma Xi and earned the 1976 George Westinghouse Silver Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, who recognized him as a life member in 1997. Dr. Shanklin is survived by his wife of 36 years, Margaret Anne Shanklin; his two daughters, Carolyn and Anne; and his five grandchildren: Sarah, Michael, Scott, Ryan and Emily. DR. RICHARD V.
