160 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY At the age of 17, Donald Smith was unsure of the path he would take in life. Upon realizing his ambitions would be best suited in the military, he enlisted in the United States Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1959. He then spent the subsequent 31 years in dedication to the military. As he toured across the nation, he came across several trinkets and belongings that others sold from their home. Equipped with his desire to preserve the legacy of these items, which often represented these individuals’ lives, Mr. Smith sought to place these items on display where their value could be appreciated. Retiring from the Navy in 1990 as a chief warrant officer IV, Mr. Smith relocated to Kissimmee, Florida, alongside his wife. While there, he maintained involvement in myriad military organizations. He is a lifetime member of such eminent associations as the Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Association, among others. Likewise, he has been affiliated with the Veterans Council of Osceola County, Florida, which honors American veterans by playing Taps and performing the 21-gun salute for veterans who have passed away. Post-retirement, Mr. Smith has engaged himself with the Museum of Military History in Kissimmee since 2004, where he has sat as chairman of the board of directors since 2007. Previously serving the museum as treasurer and vice president, he has thoroughly enjoyed his time spent at the museum and giving back to the community of veterans within his region. Attributing his success to his diligent work ethic and being around incredible individuals throughout his life, Mr. Smith has been honored several times in recognition of his service. He was named a Veteran of Influence by the Orlando Business Journal and was twice named Outstanding Veteran of the Year in 2010 and 2019. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue working at the museum. DONALD SMITH CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Museum of Military History Kissimmee, FL
