87 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Supported by more than 60 years of experience in academia, Dr. Brian J. Spooner has notably served as a professor of anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia since 1989. Formerly recognized as an associate professor and assistant professor of anthropology beginning in 1958, he also dedicated numerous years of teaching at the University of Oxford in England, his alma mater. With research interests in social anthropology, the globalization of Islam in the Middle East, South Asia and Central Asia, social organization, ethnohistory, religion and ecology, Dr. Spooner has published myriad books and monographs throughout his longstanding career. From 1997 to 2005, Dr. Spooner honorably served as editor of Pakistan Studies News, the biannual newsletter of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies. Likewise, he has been an editor for anthropology articles in the Encyclopaedia Iranica since 1990. Involved with other organizations worldwide, he was a curator of Near Eastern Ethnology at the Penn Museum and was a faculty fellow at the Penn Institute of Urban Research. Likewise, he was an affiliated faculty member of the GSE Program in International Educational Development and faculty advisory board member of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships. Earlier positions to Dr. Spooner’s credit have included chair of the Anthropology Graduate Group, director of the Middle East Center, assistant director of the British Institute of Persian Studies in Tehran, Iran, and advisor of the Department of the Environment within the Office of the Prime Minister of Iran. Likewise, he was senior advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Desertification and, since 1979, he has been an executive committee member of the American Institute of Iranian Studies, for whom he previously served as president. Initially studying the complexities and culture of Ancient Greek and Latin, Dr. Spooner’s interests led him to study anthropology, where he then honed his expertise on Iranian studies. Drawing upon a PhD from the University of Oxford, he is particularly proud of his 2019 article “The Persianate Millennium.” Millennium Magazine Featured Listee BRIAN J.
