Although his career has been abound with highlights, Mr. Walzer emphasizes that a crowning achievement was placing 13th in the State of Ohio as a middle-distance runner during his high school years, for which he received myriad ribbons in track competitions. Civically engaged as well, he has further lent his time and expertise as a poll worker in the Summit County Board of Elections since 2016 and has been a donor for the Kent State Alumni Association’s high school scholarship fund. Likewise, he has been amember of the Akron Hiking Club since 2012. Mr. Walzer intends to continue contributing his services and exercising his body through the Akron Hiking Club, and he also would like to become a foster parent. He lives by the saying, “Any rule without any exceptions is an exceptional rule, and mathematics is full of them.” Mr. Walzer notes that this phrase has inspired his mathematics students. While a senior in high school, Michael J. Walzer conducted tutoring classes at a Catholic grade school as a class project. This formative experience persuaded him to pursue a career in academia, particularly within the realm of elementary education. Matriculating at Kent State University, he earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1976. That same year, he joined the faculty at Akron Public Schools in Ohio, where he served as a teacher of mathematics, science and history for fifth through ninth grade. During his tenure, he also notably excelled as a soccer and track coach. He ultimately retired from education in 2006 after accruing 30 years of excellence in the field. Attributing his success to his outstanding upbringing with two compassionate Roman Catholic parents, Mr. Walzer has always exhibited a grand appreciation for teachers who specialize in special education, physical education and art, noting that he often served as a substitute teacher in those subjects.
