276 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY S tudying nature, Dr. James Martin Trappe became enthralled with fungi and forestry. Attending the University of Washington, he received a BS in forest management in 1953 before obtaining an MF from SUNY in 1955. Achieving a PhD from the University of Washington in 1962, he commenced his work at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station in La Grande, Oregon, in 1956, where he remained before transferring to Portland in 1958. He was appointed to project leader in forest mycology at the Corvallis laboratory in 1965 – a position he held until 1986. Dr. Trappe joined the faculty of Oregon State University in Corvallis in 1965, where he was a research professor in the Department of Forest Science prior to attaining emeritus status in 1996. Post-retirement, he works on truffle ecology and taxonomy in collaboration with the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organizations. In 2007, Dr. Trappe co-authored a book on North American truffle identification, “Field Guide to North American Truffles: Hunting, Identifying and Enjoying the World’s Most Prized Fungi.” A second volume on the ecology of truffles debuted in 2008, “Trees, Truffles, and Beasts: How Forests Function.” He has also authored and co-authored three other books and 510 scientific papers. Dr. Trappe has guided research on mycorrhizal fungi and is a pioneering figure in the research of truffle taxonomy, where he established a new order, two new families and 40 genera. In recognition of his work, the family Trappeaceae was named in his honor. He also earned the 1979 Civil Rights Accomplishment Award from the U.S. Forest Service, the 1990 Civil Liberties Award and the 1995 Barrington Moore Memorial Award. Dr. Trappe is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. An honorary life member of the Oregon Mycological Society and North America Truffling Society, he is a past president and 1991 Outstanding Science Award recipient of the Northwest Scientific Association and past president and Distinguished Mycologist of the Mycological Society of America.
