89 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D eriving her inspiration to become an educator from her family history, who were composed of teachers themselves, Dr. Frances LaVonne White prepared for her career by matriculating at Merritt College, earning an AA in education in 1968. Obtaining a BS in psychology and an MS in counseling and psychology, both from California State University, Hayward in 1970 and 1972, respectively, she accrued years of expertise in academia before completing a PhD in education administration from the University of California Berkeley in 1990. At the inception of her career in 1980, Dr. White served as an instructor of psychology at the Peralta Community College District for one decade before becoming director of staff development from1990 to 1991. Relocating to Laney College, she excelled as dean of social sciences, arts and physical education for three years before serving in the same capacity for Evergreen Valley Col- lege for an additional two years. Concurrently, she was an interim chancellor for the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District before working for the City College of San Francisco as executive vice chancellor from 1996 to 1999. Retired since 2010, Dr. White flourished as president of Skyline College begin- ning in 1999. Congruent to this position, shewas superintendent and president of the College of Marin from 2004 to 2010, after which she retired. Alongside her professional pursuits, Dr. White contributed to Seton Medical Center as a community advisory board member and to Families on Track as chairperson of the board of directors. While working and living in Marin County, she also sat as a board member and chairperson of the Marin Symphony from 2011 to 2015. Furthermore, Dr. White maintained membership with the American Association of University Women, Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) and San Rafael Rotary Club, serving the latter as board president. In light of her distinguished achievements, Dr. White was inducted into the Marin Women’s Hall of Fame in 2019. She was also honored as Educator of the Year in 2011 and with the Harry J. Buttimer Award for Distinguished Administration from the ACCCA in 2010. Additionally, she was named a Dedicated Service CEO in 2010.
