At the inception of her career in 1969, Dr. Schmall was an instructor atWilsall Consolidated Schools in Montana before becoming a teaching assistant and field supervisor of gerontology students at Oregon State University from 1971 to 1975. While pursuing her doctorate, shewas the director of the university gerontology program at Oregon State for three years. During this time, she established an annual OSUGerontology Conference for professionals and practitioners that continues today. She continued her tenure with Oregon State as professor and gerontology specialist in theOSUExtension Service before attaining emeritus status in 1994. In the latter stages of her career, Dr. Schmall established Aging Concerns, a non-profit in West Linn, Oregon, serving as executive director and gerontology specialist since 1994. She has also been a consultant to several professional and community organizations, and for Pfizer since 1999. Currently, she is consulting with the Be EPIC Dementia Program at Western University in Ontario, Canada. In her career, Dr. Schmall notably developed a six-week self-care training program for family caregivers, titled “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” which is now offered in 40 U.S. states, Canada and South Korea. The program has been translated into Spanish, Korean and French. She has written more than 150 articles and book chapters and developed 10 multimedia training programs and four educational games on age-related issues and family caregiving. Dr. Schmall was named one of 100 Most DistinguishedAlumni byMontana StateUniversity in 1993 and received the LEAP Award from the JFR Foundation in 2014, the Eli Bassi Outstanding Contribution Award from the Institute on Aging Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention in 2005 and the Gloria Cavanaugh Award from the American Society on Aging in 2002. W hile studying as an undergraduate at Montana State University, Dr. Vicki L. Schmall focused her attention on family and human development. Receiving a BS in 1970, she went to graduate school and began taking courses in gerontology – a subspecialty she pursued for her career. In 1977, she earned VICKI L.
