315 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine Throughout his life, Dr. George Robert Painter III has exhibited an extraordinary interest in the sciences. This lifelong interest ultimately led him into the field of virology and the pursuit of drugs to address serious viral diseases. He began his career in the pharmaceutical industry at the Burroughs Wellcome Company in 1982 and, as time progressed, was promoted to director of chemistry and director of virology. In 1996, he moved into the biotechnology sector. From 1996 to 2002, he flourished as founder and executive vice president of research and development at Triangle Pharmaceuticals, and from 2002 to 2012, as founder and chief executive officer of Chimerix, Inc. In 2012, Dr. Painter returned to his alma mater, Emory University, where he has excelled as director of the Emory Institute for Drug Development, and professor of pharmacology and chemical biology at the Emory University School of Medicine. During his tenure at the Emory Institute of Drug Development, he directed the establishment of a freestanding drug discovery and development company within the university structure. He is the co-inventor of more than 55 patents, six of which have led to approved commercially available drugs or combination of drugs for the treatment of HIV and hepatitis B, including the widely used HIV drug emtricitabine. He is exceptionally proud of inventing a new antiviral drug for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, molnupiravir, which is currently in the late clinical trial stage of development and is being used for humanitarian purposes in India. Dr. Painter holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, Master of Science in physical organic chemistry and PhD in synthetic chemistry from Emory University. After graduation, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. He has maintained affiliation with the International Society for Antiviral Research, the American Society of Microbiology and the American Chemical Society. Looking toward the future, Dr. Painter intends to continue his research to find drugs for the treatment and prevention of deadly viruses, particularly as they relate to the medical needs of underserved populations. Likewise, he is contemplating the establishment of another biotechnology company.
