129 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine W ith a focus on the semiconductor industry, Federico Faggin has made a name for himself in the field of electronics. Born in Vicenza, Italy, Dr. Faggin completed graduate work at the A. Rossi State Industrial Engineering Institute in 1960 and earned a Doctor of Physics from the University of Padua in 1965. Soon thereafter, in 1968, he migrated to the United States, where he began his career as a section head for the Fairchild Camera & Instrument Corporation, and two years later, served as a department manager for the Intel Corporation. With hard work and dedication, he became the founder and president of Zilog, Inc. and continued to soar, later serving as vice president of a computer systems group for Exxon Enterprise. Mr. Faggin also co-founded Cygnet Technologies and Synaptics Incorporated, where he is now chairman emeritus, and was president and chief executive officer of Foveon Inc. His technical savvy led to the development of silicon gate technology for MOS fabrication and several microprocessors, including Intel 4004, Intel 8080, Intel 4040, Intel 8008, Intel 2102A, Zilog Z80 and Zilog Z8. Dr. Faggin was honored for his contributions to the field with the Marconi Fellowship Award in 1988, induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1996, the W. Wallace McDowell Award from the IEEE Computer Society in 1997, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Patent Office in 2006, and the White House’s National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2010. Additionally, he is heavily involved in philanthropic endeavors, including serving as president of the Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation, which was established in 2011 and supports various research programs at United States universities and research institutes to advance the understanding of consciousness through theoretical and experimental research.
