430 MILLENNIUM M ary Zahner is an art instructor with many years of experience in the educational system. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Arts from Ohio University, and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. Dr. Zahner’s career began with her serving as an instructor in Springfield Township schools, then obtaining similar positions at Logan High School and Dover High School. She became chair of the art department at Dover High School from 1969 to 1971, and then continued progressing within the education system. Dr. Zahner’s hard work and dedication paid off when she took on new roles as an assistant professor and associate professor before achieving her current status as professor emerita at the University of Dayton. During her fruitful career as an art educator, she coordinated an art contest for high school students sponsored by Tony P. Hall and was also a board member for the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, a funding, advocacy and service organization that inspires, supports and sustains arts and culture in the Dayton region. Not only is Dr. Zahner dedicated to teaching her craft, but she is also an advocate for higher education. She participated in the Oxford Round Table on education in 2004, on the advisory committee for teacher preparation programs, and as a member of the Ohio Department of Education higher education steering committee in 1995. She has used her expertise in art to contribute to various book chapters, and her work has been featured by the Westbeth Gallery, the University Council for Art Education, and the Pleiades Gallery. Though she has been honored for her artwork, the highlight of her career was having the opportunity to producing an open air painting at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2011.
