Marquis Who's Who Millennium Magazine

431 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine D r. Hans-Jurgen Zimmermann is a renowned researcher and former professor who has taught at various universities in India, Europe and the United States. Since the early 1970s, he has maintained an interest in fuzzy set theory, a branch of mathematical logic, and several of its derivatives, including fuzzy mathematical programming, fuzzy control, fuzzy expert systems and fuzzy data analysis. Though a portion of his current work involves using fuzzy set theory while supervising industrial projects, he is also interested in how it can be applied in areas such as strategic planning, concurrent engineering and general business management. The recipient of a Bachelor of Science in engineering, a Master of Science in industrial engineering, and a Ph.D. in mathematical economics and business administration, Dr. Zimmermann held positions in purchasing and production before becoming an assistant and later associate professor at the University of Illinois. In 1967, he joined the faculty of RWTH Aachen University, where he was chair of the department for operations research and taught as a professor until 1999. During that time, he also served as editor-in-chief of Fuzzy Sets and Systems, editor of the European Journal of Operational Research, and co-editor of 12 international journals. He also wrote and edited more than 40 books in German and English and contributed more than 250 articles to professional journals and other scholarly publications. A respected authority in his field, Dr. Zimmermann received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels in 1986, and another from Åbo Akademi University in 1998. In 1985, the Association of European Operational Research Societies honored him with the EUROGold Medal, which was followed by the Moisil Prize and Gold Medal for outstanding contributions to fuzzy systems theory and applications, and a special Certificate of Merit from the International Fuzzy Systems Association. He was president of the German Operations Research Society and the German Industrial Engineering Society, and was vice president of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies. Additionally, Dr. Zimmermann has been included in several editions of Who’s Who in the World andWho’s Who in Science and Engineering. In 1969, he founded the company Inform GmbH, which applies operations research in practice and now has more than 600 employees. In 1991, he founded MIT (Management of Intelligent Technologies), which specializes in the application of computational intelligence.
